Finings

Post by garwatts » Thu Dec 24, 2009 10:20 am

What do you use?
I've never used finings before as the beer has always cleared fine in bottles or king kegs. But since using cornies I have put about 6 different brews into them and not one has cleared
So hand in pocket again.....What the best type to use?

Gelatin here.

I'm sure it's not "the best" but it's the cheapest and most available.

Do you buy from the gelatin the supermarket? Any further advice re mix and amounts to use would be helpful :D

I use the granulated Brupaks stuff. 2 teaspoons for 23 litres. I read that the supermarket gelatin is just as good, although i've never used it.

I use Ritchies Kwik clear available from most hb shops, you only need the smallest amount.
It costs me £3.49 and comes in 2 little bottles add 1 teaspoon (part A) for 5 gallons, strir and wait half an hour then add same amount of part B, stir once again and leave.
A gallon demijohn clears starbright in 24hrs , 5 fallon fermenter takes slightly longer as it has further to fall.
for £3.49 will clear up to 270 litres.
Its amazing stuff works just as well on wine or beer. :D

Yes.

My supermarket sells the Dr. Oetker stuff. I use one packet for 5 gallons. A packet is 10g i believe.

You need to dissolve it before adding it to your beer.

I know zilch,

but I'm using Irish moss in the boil (Ritchies, who then propose you also need something like 'Kwik'),

but instead of Kwik I'm going to use Gelatin. I'm a noob so can't comment on the results.

Why bother posting? Well just to say I've read a couple of good threads that talk about NOT boiling the gelatin, as it renders it ineffective - I'll leave it to you to read up the methods of use.

I've used this too - brilliant stuff. Clears a cloudy demijohn of wine in about a day, and in 3 days cleared a keg of Townes IPA bright having giving it 5 weeks to do so itself... US-05

Some lagers/ales require finings, alot is down the to the yeast....eg Fullers own, falls bright, so you shudnt need any finings!... Alot of commerical brewery's use it because if you look at their beers, you will see its 100% crystal clear eg: Isinglass fining, these come in flakes or liquid, which are made from sturgeon fish eggs, off the top of my head and gelatine is from part of trotter(hoof)...Gelatine you can purchase from a super-market. Isinglass do not work if the temperature is too high, i have got some flakes in stock..Do NOT confuse there with copper finings.....
