Carbonation & Sediment

Post by beers_great » Fri Jan 22, 2010 2:03 pm

Hi,

can someone please give me some advise about the best procedure to carbonate by beer bottles with minimum sediment. I have been brewing for a good number of years now and I have long since worked out how to prime my beer prior to bottling so that I get a secondary fermintation in the bottles and thus carbonation. The resulting beer is usually good and carbonated, however I do get a lot of sediment. :?

What I would like is a carbonated bottle of beer with as little sediment as possible. [-o<

I dont use any clearing agents and I generally keep my beer in the secondary for a few weeks instead.

Im considering buying some swing top bottles and if I got to the expense of doing that I would like the beer to be presented at its best.

thanks. :D

What fining/clearing procedures do you use?

I have always had poor results with fining. So for the last Year I havent bothered. I suppose I must have been applying it wrong as no one else appears to have a problem with it. I have also been a bit concerned that if I dont get the timing right with finings my bottles/barrels wont have enough active yeast to pressurise.

Fortunately the beer has always cleared quite well on its own after a few weeks. The heat this summer made it a little difficult, but on the whole time and cool temps have done the trick.

Well the process in this thread is simple and works for me:

Never had a problem with beers carbonating nicely.

Thanks for that I will give it a go, but with reference to the sediment. Once you put the beer into the bottles, how much sediment do you generally get?

A light dusting.

Not really enough to make the beer noticably cloudy, even if poured right to the bottom.

I'm sure any make of gelatin will do the job.

Just don't let it cool too much before you add it, otherwise it will turn into unflavoured, clear jelly - personal experience!
