Digital Thermometer

Any recommendations for a Digital Thermometer with a decent sized read out and the ability to survive hot steamy environment without dying? Oh yes and doesn't cost an arm and a leg

Good question! I too would be very interested to know the forum consensus on best thermometers. I only got two brews out of my last one, before I melted the plastic trying to get the water out of it.

FV: -
Conditioning: AG34 Randy's Three Nipple Tripel 9.2%, AG39 APA for a mate's wedding
On bottle: AG32 Homegrown Northdown ESB, AG33 Homegrown Cascade Best
On tap: -
Garden: 2x cascade, 2x Farnham whitebine (mathon), 2x northdown, 1x first gold

I use a Hanna one with a small metal probe on the end but it was something like £43 from a lab supply company.

I've used one of these for the last 6 brews and for various other cooking tasks and it is still going strong! To be honest I thought it would die rather qucikly at the price but it seems to work fine, and it's pretty accurate too! :D

If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

I also use a Hanna one and it's completely waterproof (even the main body - which is good as I've dropped it in the mash before). Great piece of kit. Before I had it, I killed a lot of cheap digital ones.

The problem is, they are bloody expensive. The one i have is this one:http://www.hannainst.co.uk/product/HI-9 ... /HI-95502/

They are about £100 for the body, and another £30 for the probe

However - I think these are the "standard" thermometer than students on some catering courses have to buy, so they DO crop up on eBay fairly regularly. I paid £12 for mine....

I also think it's worth while spending a little on a decent accurate thermometer. I've had one of these for about 18 months: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/THERMAPEN-1-FR-HI ... 562ebf3e1e
Mr Nick's Brewhouse.

I've been happy enough with this one:

http://www.thermometersuperstore.co.uk/ ... meter.html

I've only used it a few times so can't comment on durability, but with the probe being on a 1 metre lead, the electronics don't have to be in the hot environment (and I don't have to take the lid off my mash to read the temperature).

There's a couple of hanna ones on eBay at the moment. Not sure what the reserves are, but I put a speculative bid on one at £20 and it wasn't enough. I'd say if you could get one for c.£30 plus P&P it would be a good deal.

For example: this one

FYI - it's not the electronics being waterproof that's the issue, its how waterproof the probe is - if water gets down inside the probe casing to the thermistor, they give false readings and are a bugger to dry out again!

I get nervous about them breaking and sending glass shards into my beer.
