I just bought one for $10. I'm going to put a little silicone around the head, where the probe enters. That should stop any condensation from entering.

I've got an infra red thermometer. I use it for checking temperature of fermenter. Works very well.

I use one of these:

I find it works great for my brews and is great for judging when a steak is perfectly rare!

That is nice. A lot better than mine. Hopefully I'll be able to get some use from mine.

I've %$£&ed two of these now

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Taylors-Witness ... 246&sr=8-5

Amazon are fantastic on returns but its not easy to return the second. The first one lasted about 4 brews, the second gave up after the mash on its first outing. Both stick around the 55 degree mark and won't drop below it.

I want an idiot proof one (for obvious reasons)

The only problem I see with an Infra Red Thermometer is it only reads surface temperatures. Ok for wart in the FV but for the temp of a Mash not ideal

However this sounds interesting

Looks like a great deal which makes me suspicious. I thought ph meters were expensive. Does anyone know if these cheap ones are worth their weight :-k ?

I'm always tempted by the 20 quid pH meter, part of me knows it will be junk though and i'll have noway of verifying the reading :-s

I have this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0443328143

Works well. Though you can get it £10 delivered if you google it.

Stab the probe through clear sandwich bag(you can still press the buttons etc) as the steam off the HLT/Mash might get into the electronics. Will last longer too.

Got one of those but it does get steamed up at times. Have just picked up a Hanna for £25 8)

I was just playing with one at my LHBS, amazing! (He uses it to take the temp of the grain while solar toasting malt) I was taking the surface temp of the floor, the cat*, the wall, my hand ... not really necessary, but I want one too!
Using it for the fermenter temperature seems like a good excuse! The price has really come down recently.
*she was the same temp as the surrounding surfaces because fur is a good insulator - but I was careful not to point the laser at her eyes.

I've got the same one as Jeremy.
I orginally bought one off ebay for ~£10, and on second use, I think steam got in, and it wouldn't accurately read anything below 50C.
called supplier and got another FOC, and its been fine.

just being careful not to immerse end, or leave in steam too long.

best bit of it is the alarm function on min/max.
I can set it for say, 80C so I dont need to babysit the HLT when its warming and can get on with other tasks.

Correlated the temp reading against my glass one and it seems to be reliable.

I've already killed two #-o
I've been happy enough with this one:

http://www.thermometersuperstore.co.uk/ ... meter.html

I've only used it a few times so can't comment on durability, but with the probe being on a 1 metre lead, the electronics don't have to be in the hot environment (and I don't have to take the lid off my mash to read the temperature).

Jeremy
I cooked that one on its second use. Left the probe in water for about half an hour and it got inside and knackered it. Tried drying it out in the oven and I melted the plastic. You might want to reinforce it with some glue or something to better seal the probe?
