Howdy,
A recipe for Duvel insists on recultured yeast from a bottle rather than the usual liquid recommendations
and this gives me a chance to have a go at something I've been wanting to try for a while.
Most guides suggest the starter ought to be made by boiling a DME solution to pitch the
slurry from the bottom of the donor bottles into. Trouble is I haven't got any DME and it costs
more than I feel the experiment deserves anyway.
Can I mash small amount of grain instead to give me enough wort to make the starter?
I guess this would only need to be quite a weak solution to work?
Anyone tried this way? what kind of gravity reading would make a feasable starter?
thanks in advance.

Re: Recultured yeast newbie
The short answer is YES! Make it to a gravity of 1040. Some people make extra wort on brew days and keep a litre or two for this very purpose

Once in the demijohn, how long can I keep it for?

Re: Recultured yeast newbie
It will start fermenting naturally from yeast in the air if you leave it in the demijohn. Put it in some jars that you have boiled and can them. They can store for a few months if you follow aseptic techniques.
