Started my first ever kit (wilkos lager) on Monday night

Post by Nolski77 » Wed Apr 14, 2010 8:50 pm

It's been fermenting in the garage, (not ideal location I know, but the missus wouldn't have it in the house), anyway i bought a submersible fish tank heater, and it's been brewing for the past two night. Checked it this morning, and there's a few bubbles/skummy stuff on the top, but the overall colour is milky lager colour.

Would this be normal for this stage in the first fermentation?

Yeah it sounds fine as long as you keep it at the right temp everything will be OK.

From what I recall, lager needs a cooler ferment so a garage should be ideal!

Great thanks for the replys lads, the heater has been set at 22c, so hopefully i haven't had it too hot. I've checked again today and there's still signs of fermentation. Guess I'm just being impatient.

I've took my first reading.

The liquid on top of the fv still has bubbles around it, so I'm assuming it's still fermenting.

The reading from the hydrometer is 1010.

Is this cloudy colour normal for this stage?

Tastes good. Nearly finished a two litre bottle. Happy days.

Cloudy is fine at this stage... this should clear when you leave it for a month or so after secondary fermentation.

Regarding lager fermenting at a cooler temperature... I think its lager yeast that prefers the cooler temperature. The last kit I brewed was a Coopers Mexican Cerveza which is a lager kit but it comes with an Ale Yeast so it just ferments at the same temperature as when brewing ale.

Looks good to me! If you think it tastes good now, you'll be amazed by how good it is in 2 months!! On a side note, I notice you drive a facelift vectra c. You a member on Vectra-c.com?
