Home Brew competition The Harlequin Sheffield

Post by brewcopete » Tue May 25, 2010 3:47 pm

Hi all,

I own a small craft brewery in Sheffield called The Brew Company and also a freehouse called The Harlequin.
The Harlequin is having a home brew competition in July dubbed ‘Brew Off 2010’. We are asking home brewers to brew the best beer they can then either bottle it or put into Cornelius kegs. The bottled or kedged beers must then be brought along to the pub by the end of June where a panel of beer bloggers, landlords, local craft brewers and CAMRA officials will form a blind tasting panel and all the beers will be marked on appearance, flavour, aroma and impact. The winner and two runners up will then get to go to The Brew Company and scale up the winning recipes to full size commercial brews before trying the finished product on the bar a few weeks later. Home brewers wishing to take part in the competition should in the first instance contact The Brew Company on 0114 2709991 (leave a message) or by using the contact form on my website at www.thebrewcompany.co.uk

I hope many of you will be able to take part for what proves to be a fun event with an exciting conclusion for the winner and runners up.

Good luck!

Crikey - don't tell them there are kegs involved! They'll refuse to drink it you know

Now you're tempting me to enter... "Yes, forced carbonation is an integral part of the character of this particular beer"...

Looks interesting, might be interested.
What type of beers are you interested in?

Would it be safe to leave a valuable corney keg? :? :?

I emailed pete, and he said 4 bottles.
3 for the night, and 1 to keep back if you win, to compare the brewed up version against at the bar on tap when its made.

personally I think no-one should bother, I mean why waste your time giving away your hard crafted beer, to people you dont even know.
no, stay at home, give it a wide berth.

especially dont enter anything in the categories of bitter, IPA and porter  :-$

These things normally come with all sorts of rules and things don't they... ('The height of the bottle must be between...' [-X ) And I can't see any 'rules' on the website. If it's as easy as send along four bottles of the same beer I have brewed then I'm in. It will be worth it for the feedback... Every one else that tastes my beer says 'It's good' when I'm really after critical appraisal...

this is what pete emailed to me:

Ideally i would like 4 x pint bottles or a corny keg if you don't bottle. This is so we have 3 bottles to do the tasting with (i expect 10 people on the panel) and one bottle to keep so we can both compare it against the scaled up commercial cask version.

If you wish to take part please email me your contact details (phone number etc) , the beer name and style and expected ABV before June 4th and i'll put you on the list.

The beer should be brought to the Harlequin pub with bottles / kegs clearly marked with all the same information no later than June 30th and i'll then let you know what night the tasting is so you can come along and join in the fun, talk to lots of brewers and beer writers etc. The winner and runners up will be announced on the night.

Furthermore, cornies need all relevant bits to serve from as well, disconnects, tap, gas etc...
trouble is, I'll be dropping it off there, and then not having anything to serve from at home!!
therefore bottles would be easier!!
