HOW LONG TO MATURE

Post by fisherman » Tue Jul 20, 2010 12:18 pm

Hi lads,
How long would you say it takes a 1040 0g beer to mature to good drinking condition in a beer bottle. e.g malt and hop flavour.

Hard to be precise because it depends on lots of things but reckon on 2 to 4 weeks.

I read somewhere that allowing 1 week per 10 points of OG is a decent rule.

Personally, I reckon 4 weeks minimum. I've recently been drinking less and also been ironically brewing larger batches. I now have the ability to have 50l conditioning from any one batch at any time. I am finding that beers are getting infinitely better with longer maturing times, especially extract beers that need longer for the malt to mellow.

Leave it for a couple of weeks then open a bottle or so each week - its a good learning process.

Try and keep a few back to let them age even further ( this is the hard bit I find) :D

This is a good method. I do this and enjoy the different and often more pronounced hop flavour of the young beer. Then enjoy the mature beer..........it's like having two brews!

Thanks lads.
Just to confirm I think the same as you all, Before i mashed i used to use a kit with malt powder and a few boiled hops but find as this beer matures over 3 months it deteriates to near undrinkable. fresh green beer used to taste much nicer. is it the same for mashed beer. what do you think. does it pay not to have to much in stock so it is fresh.

It's a matter of taste. Did you have a look at this viewtopic.php?f=24&t=33931

I read that, and have done similar before by kegging a bit early, didn't have the ability to crash cool though which would have cleared it up. I was still drinking by day 12 though IIRC.

Now I use cornies I tend to leave in primary for around 10 days then age depending on the beer and samples along the way. 8)

I had some really malty ones that were good early but really fantastic at 3 months. It's hard to not drink them!

Too true. I keep trying to build up a stock, but the stuff just disappears before 3 weeks are up.
