Second Stuck Sparge?

Post by Chard » Wed Jul 21, 2010 9:21 am

My second brewday has come and gone and it was just as fun as the first (i had 2 helpers, SWMBO and good mate Will) and all went swimmingly except i got a stuck runoff on my second batch sparge.

you can look at the links in my signature to see my equipment but its basically the FV in an FV affair with lots of little holes drilled in.

Why is it causing this problem each time? is it a temperature thing? seems like it should be since the first runnings dont stick? what temp should i be aiming for?

alternatively should i take the easy way out and just make the holes bigger :P

Cheers

You probably just need more holes or bigger holes (or both).

Or you could just buy a mashing/sparging bag. I've never had a stuck mash with one.

how would temp affect it? if i sparged at a higher temp would that cause a stuck sparge?

It's very unlikely. Perhaps you just need to start drawing off the liquid a bit slower to allow the grain bed to settle.
