Bottled the beer now its like a syrup???

Post by rimski » Fri Jul 23, 2010 8:04 pm

I made my first AG Brew just over a month ago.
As you can see from THIS POST I had a couple of small issues but nothing to drastic how since bottling the beer on the 6th of this month something has gone drastically wrong.

I used standard white sugar to condition and carbonate the beer however now when I opened my 1st bottle I have found that the beer has the consitsancy of a runny syrup which is best decsribed as gloopy.

Any ideas??

Wierd! Were the bottles well sealed ? The only thing I can think of is that the bottle cap wasn't seated correctly and the air has got at it. Try another bottle ?
Dan!

Opened 4 bottles and they are all the same and were all sealed well

Could it be ropey?

It's an infection which causes gooey gelatinous strands in the beer, hence 'ropey beer'.

Not 100% sure what it is exactly, but IIRC it's airborne... could have got in during the ferment.

Personally, i would not ferment in a garage this time of year, or anytime for that fact, and the "flies buzzing round" bit, TBH to me flies buzzing round a bin winds me up, let alone my beer, whether its sealed in a fermenter or not.

I brew in the garage with the door open, ferment in the house, with erlenmeyer flasks and blow off tubes, no risk of anything entering the beer, and not much risk of a bunch 'a' flies.

TBH if i was brewing that as you if you get me, id personally chuck it, flies and beer for you to drink ? nah.

Have fun, lee

I guess I need to work on the "BETTER" half as atm I have no chance of putting a large bucket of fermenting beer inside the house as we don't have the space atm.

I ordered some blow off airlocks so I can properly seal the fermenting buckets.

Thanks for advice.

Your mouth naturally contains lactobacillus bacteria and is a common source of infection - the solution is to fit a tap and use a bottling stick.
Damn     thats exactly what I did until I watched a podcast that showed filling the tube with water and running off into a side tray 1st

Brewing is all about learning I guess as always I learnt more from my mistake

If it's any help, I've done 2 AG brews now and both were fermented in the garage. In both cases I covered the FV in a sheet to keep the light etc out, and they've both come out absolutely fine. However, I do have taps fitted to my buckets, so as with Chris-x1 that's something I'd recommend.

When I'm siphoning out of the FV into a secondary for mixing prior to bottling (the secondary has a tap which I've bodged a bottling stick on to), I put one of those crappy inline plastic taps on the end of the pipe. I then suck until I get a mouthful of beer (don't spit!) and close the tap (while still sucking so no gob gets back), put it into position and then pop the tap off. The only problem is that you need a third hand to hold the wet end in position or it'll be in danger of dropping out on to the floor.

Did you syphon your beer and use your mouth to start the syphon ?

Your mouth naturally contains lactobacillus bacteria and is a common source of infection - the solution is to fit a tap and use a bottling stick.
Pediococcus can also cause ropiness in beer. Does it smell of buttered popcorn? If so it's probably Pedio.

The end effect is much the same regardless. It's drain cleaner now.

I couldn't pick up on a popcorn type smell or any other deserning smell for that matter and I couldn't agree more, luckily the drains needed a good clean.

I have a video of the beer

That's harsh... and a spectacular failure.
