Isinglass - never used it before

Post by jat147 » Fri Jul 23, 2010 8:43 am

Hi everyone,

I want to bottle my second batch of IPA soon, but really want it to be clear.
The first effort tasted great, but was spoiled a little by the sediment in the bottles.

I understand that Isinglass, etc will make the yeast drop out of the suspension, so it would seem
to make sense to add the fining to the secondary, before racking to the bottling barrel.
That way the bottling process should be free from yeast to cloud the bottles up.

Question is: when the yeast has dropped out, will priming the bottles have any effect?
If no yeast is left how can the bottles condition fully? will they take longer, or is that the trade off?
I made a munich dunkel in the winter which lagered for ages, making it super clear and really
lovely - but it was as flat as a 'witches'. I think this was why??

Can anyone clear this up for me please? #-o ....sorry about that

Thanks Chris,

That does make sense - i suppose removing the yeast will bring the conditioning to a dead halt.
Why do commercial bottlers use a second yeast at bottling, why not just leave the primary yeast in place?

Certain yeasts are better than others for bottling - Nottingham and SO4 are the most commonly used.
I'll agree with that Chris, whenever I brew to bottle I use S-04.

A lot of commercial breweries use aux finings such as cellabrite when cooling the beer down in fermenter prior to transfering to secondary, this brings alot of the yeast out of suspension and already quite bright! You can then bottle from the secondary, given you get your sugar levels correct then you should come out with a good bottled conditioned ale!

Theres no issue with using isinglass for bottling, its all down to how its done.
I use it all the time and end up with a nice 1/2mm of sediment which is perfect for a bit of condition.
Rack from primary into a secondary bucket, add auxiliary at the beginning, fill with beer and add soem isinglass at the end, gently stir with a spoon and leave for 24hours.
I would agree if you left it longer than this length of time the isinglass will drop alot more yeast out but Ive found this works for me.
Ive had lovely clear results so far. :-)

I use all clarifiers, from supermoss HB in the boil to polyclar / isinglass / gelatine and Kieselsol, I bottle.

I use WL vials and the usual grain and hops, I have no problems with unstable sediment, nor do I wish to keep my brew for months once its ready, it works for me, I have super clear beer, with a super crisp taste with no probs towards carbonation, I have brewed with and without these additives too.

I have an IPA here in grolsch bottles and my "sorta" kolsch bodge / tester, both have stiff sediments and if they break its like crusty pieces that just resettle anyway.

Im just saying i have no probs, in fact to me its a plus to taste (massively), with no inconvenience.

cheers, lee

I do it as the same as crooked a few posts up, but add the rest in secondary too, just spanned out over 4-5 days.
