watery batch - help

Post by Acie » Wed Aug 18, 2010 11:18 pm

Hi,

My 3rd batch of coopers mexican cerveza has turned out watery and the other 2 were ok. I think I may have filled it up with too much water at the start slightly over 25 gall. Would this have been the problem ?

Please Help,

Garrett

Considering they're 5 gallon kits i'd say you've added about 20 gallons too much so would be a tad watery!
Even if you meant 25 litres, you've added a couple of litres too much water ;)

it would have been a MAJOR problem if you used 25 gallons!! if you filled it to 25 LITRES then that would have beena problem as there supposed to be around 23litres which is 5 gallons.....

so in answer to your question, yes it sounds like you have overfilled it...

You can add some more sugars to it to keep the strength up, but it will lack some flavour and body.
I only fill my FV to 20l on a 5 gallon kit. I'd rather lose a few pints and have a good flavoured beer than have a thin brew.

good idea, even if i have allready put it in barrel ,is it ok to open the top and put some more sugar in now.but if i put more sugar ,wont that make to much head ,like to much gas .froth,

Yeah, the fermentation will continue while you feed it sugar, but it will dreate more co2 and sediment.
You can release a bit of gas if you feel its getting too frothy when you pour a pint by releasing the cap a little, but the sediment you will have to live with unless you rack it off to another keg.
