Using a blender for milling

Post by simco999 » Tue Nov 09, 2010 11:54 pm

Can anyone comment on using a blender to mill your grain to get a better efficiency? If I am using BIAB will I benefit from milling finer with a blender?

Daft question??

I suspect efficiency will increase at the expense of a lot of grain material carrying over to the boil (and thus inherent problems with clarity, tannin extraction in the boil, etc). For me, saving 300g of malt or something isn't worth the hassle.

It will take ages to process a sensible amount of grain in an ordinary domestic blender and it would be quite hard to get a consistent mill. You might well end up making glue. But why not try it on a small batch?

I agree with the last two posts. You could always ask your supplier to mill finer too.

A mill is designed to crush the grain to leave the husk intact, a blender will tear it to shreds. It is also quite messy and time consuming.
