Schmidling Malt Mill
Schmidling Malt Mill
Slightly disappointed with the grain flaker I shipped in from the States. It wasn't really big enough for the job but it broke tonight as I tried to flake 8lb of wheat grain. So now I'm looking for something more robust and I have seen the Malt Mill from Schmidling in USA.
This looks a real beast. Does anyone use it. Will the preadjusted roll oats too do you think?
Cheers

Re: Schmidling Malt Mill
There is a UK stockist for it here: http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/aca ... _Mill.html. But the price.......
I've got one of these: http://www.crankandstein.net/index.php? ... ucts_id=11. OK, it's not quite as big as the Schmidling mill, and you have to make your own hopper (dead simple & cheap), but in its favour the rollers have detented adjusters at each end so the gap can be set to 9 different widths ranging from 0.025" to 0.065" depending on the type of grain being milled, whereas the Schmidling's rollers are set at a fixed width. I also bought the optional handcrank: http://www.crankandstein.net/index.php? ... ucts_id=20
Altogether, mine cost me around £130 shipped from the USA all in (Including VAT & import duty, and the materials to make the hopper) - see here for the finished article: http://jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopi ... 6&p=289264. That's still less than half what the Schmidling would cost. It is built like a tank, completely reliable, and does an excellent job - certainly more than adequate for my needs.

Re: Schmidling Malt Mill
I use one and it's great. Not used oats, so can't comment, but the unit is very heavy and robust and guaranteed for life. Although details of the mill can be found HERE Jack put me on to the GRAPE & GRANARY to purchase. You'll need to email them for shipping costs.greenxpaddy wrote:Slightly disappointed with the grain flaker I shipped in from the States. thanks all.
In a quandry now. Have also received a quote for 'the barley crusher' at $180 delivered....
I like the size of the Schmidling and Barley crusher. Think it will make life dead easy. Milling is the most laborious part of AG.
I did see the Schmidling on the home brew shop site but wasn't paying £280............oh no
Decisions, decisions. Jack's not yet got back to me.

I have JSP Malt MIll, used it for years. It does the job and Jack's a nice bloke too.

I expect I'm missing something here, but why not just buy it pre-crushed?greenxpaddy wrote:Milling is the most laborious part of AG.

I ordered a barley crusher last week - some really good reviews on the US forums. Now the waiting game to see whether I get to pay customs duty on it when it hits the ukgreenxpaddy wrote:thanks all.

Re: Schmidling Malt Mill
Ps if you buy it through http://www.beersmith.com. It's about 10$ cheaper
It also hooks straight up to a battery drill.

Re: Schmidling Malt Mill
I have been looking at stripping down a Pasta Machine I have In my Kitchen cupboard, taking the rollers to work getting them Knurled on a lathe, then putting it back together.
As its fully adjustable for gap I think it will make a really good Budget Mill, I will have to make a hopper for it but its will work out cheap if it works I don't fancy shelling out for a schmidling etc

Re: Schmidling Malt Mill
My Barley Crusher is really nice to use, and once I finally get rid of the old (15+ Years) Tumble Dryer I'll have a motor to motorise it in place
. . .Rather than use my cordless drill

Re: Schmidling Malt Mill
Hope its the right speed for you.
I've orderd the Barley Crusher. Think the adjustability will help with the different grains.
As to why mill your own....you have the ability to experiment with how fine you mill the wheat in a wheat beer. Plus milling just before the mash will give it a fresher note....

I have a Candy washing machine which needs new bearings. Do you think I might be able to use the motor for my grain mill? Or is that overkill? I suppose I would just need to adjust the voltage over the motor?
How do you currently secure your drill to the barley crusher? Can you just use the chuck to tighten it on?
