Bengal lancer yeast

Post by far9410 » Fri May 13, 2011 7:18 am

Hi all
Got two bottles of the above, I want to try and use the yeast. If I add a little boiled water and some dme/ sugar, will that do? How long before it's ready to use?

If it was me, I'd add a small volume (50ml) of 1.030 wort and let that ferment for a couple of days, before stepping up up to a larger volume, maybe 400ml of 1.035-1.040 wort, and then a day or two later to 1-2L depending on how big a starter you'd like to make.

As long as the wort and container aren't contaminated with anything other than yeast, it should keep for at least a week in the fridge.

The amount of yeast you need (and hence the size of starter) also depends on the gravity of your beer, but 1-2L is a good size for most standard gravity Ales.

I leave mine in the fridge for a week without worrying, and up to 2 weeks if I don't get to brew when I planned, longer than that and I'd look to revive the yeast (pitch into a new starter) before using it.

Thanks chaps, do you think it's really worth doing this? Is the yeast that much better than pitching a new packet?
