Nutrient problem
Nutrient problem
Help!
I just added nutrient to the wrong FV! The beer I added it to is almost fully fermented (about 8 points to go) - will it wreck the beer/flavour?
It is a stout.

Re: Nutrient problem
Why would it wreck a beer that's almost fermented and not a beer that has yet to start fermentation?
I don't think it will make any difference, but I wouldn't add nutrient to an AG brew, bit like taking coal to Newcastle IMO.
Hope that puts your mind at rest.

Re: Nutrient problem
As the yeast has finished fermenting it will not use the nutrient, so this could remain 'as is' in the beer (unless its converted during secondary fermentation or conditioning etc). How much this matters probably depends on what the nutrient is (as Boingy was asking); I don't use it in beer but i know from wine making days that some doesn't taste very nice - though presumably the yeast sees it differently..gnorwebthgimi wrote:Why would it wreck a beer that's almost fermented and not a beer that has yet to start fermentation?

Re: Nutrient problem
Diammonium phosphate - 3 teaspoons in 22L. Was in the habit of adding some to kit brews which had a tendency to get very sluggish fermentations at times. These were my first AG brews - stout & IPA - I forgot it for the stout and was going to add it at the start of the IPA but put it in the wrong FV. Anyway, I understand from some wider reading that AG brews shouldnt really need any help so will chuck the stuff out now!
Beer has still been fermenting for the last 24 hours so hopefully it will be okay and I suppose some of it might get used during the fermentation in the bottle.

Save the DAP for mead, cider or other stuff.NewPeculier wrote:Anyway, I understand from some wider reading that AG brews shouldnt really need any help so will chuck the stuff out now!
Beer wort should have enough free amino nitrogen for active and healthy fermentation, if anything you could consider using a 'complete' yeast nutrient that is often made from yeast-hulls and similar things, since this will provide a range of nutrients that can help the yeast, but put it into the boil not into the fermentor.
Re: Nutrient problem
Going back to the original question, no, it won't do any harm to the beer.
And the error gives you the opportunity to convince yourself that the (non-nutrient) IPA will work just fine.

Re: Nutrient problem
I use yeast vit and servomyces for a healthy ferment, speeds it up too, generally its done in 3-4 days ready for secondary.
Never heard of DAP, so cant really help much there sorry
