East Kent Goldings were considered the best. I don't know why this is but they're still sold I guess there's still demand.

There are various types of Goldings:
WGV
East Kent
Worcester
Early Choice (quite a new variety)

All have been bred over the years from your basic Golding hop that used to be grown in great abundance across Kent and Sussex. They are basically the same hop with very slight variations in aroma, AA etc. Unless you are very well trained I doubt you would notice much difference in the use of any of them...except the Styrian!
I'm sure Morris Hanbury or Charles Faram would be more than happy to explain the differences, as I am no expert but they are.

Goldings are a group of hops containing several varieties that are not normally marketed individually. Historically Goldings were grown mainly in Kent, although this is no longer true (a lot are now grown in Herefordshire and Worcestershire). East Kent Goldings come from a small area in (surpize, surprize) East Kent which is supposed to have a combination of soil and micro-climate which produces a particularly fine crop of Goldings.

So, yes, EKG are better than Goldings (or at least they command a premium) but they are the same mixture of varieties. EKG is like a PDO hop!
