Hop quantities

Post by Bigster » Tue May 23, 2006 11:10 pm

Just a warning really for any new 'All grain' uns like myself - I used the Youngs vacuum packed hops and luckily I weighed them as one weighed in at 140g and the other at 167g yet the packets stated 113g ( or am I missing a trick ?).

Could have been a serious overhopping going on :o although that wouldnt be a problem for some on here ;)

I think that post should be deleted before someone from Youngs sees it ;)

Whenever I ask for a certain quantity of hops or grain from my local brewery they're always very generous with the measures :D

113g is a sensible unit!

I'm sure your right Daab. They obviously just compress them into those bricks and the weight can vary quite a bit hence the min weight being so much lower than usually found.

I like the Brupaks hops. They have less hops in the package and they are not compressed, but they usually have a wonderful aroma compared to the Morris Hanbury or Youngs. I wish I could get more varieties from them.

Excellent :) I've got a beer I've just kegged in which I used only Brupaks Goldings - I tried a wee sip (that's not a sip of urine btw  ) at the end of primary fermentation, and the hop flavour was far better than any finished beer I've made - not saying much - but am hopeful that it should be a tastey fella.

The beer in the fermenter was made with Hop and grape own brand vacuum packed hops. Anybody tried these? The aroma when I opened the packet was incredible, so I'm hoping the finished beer should be nice :beer

The Challenger Summer Ale currently in my fermenter used H&G's gold foil hops. I'm sure they are just rebranded MH, but I could be wrong. I was not overly impressed by the aroma on these TBH. I've also got some Fuggles, Goldings, Styrians and WGV from them so we'll see what they are like in comparison. Which hops have you used Dave?

btw...love the smell of freshly opened goldings when dumped in the fermenter, it filled the house with the aroma of students skinning-up (minus the body odour of course)  B)

i wouldnt have any idea what you are taking about by the words "skinning up", nor would i know the smell that you are taking about......

I used H&G Challenger, Styrian Goldings and hallertau hersbrucker. You could well be right about them being repackaged MH, but it was the aroma of the H&G Challenger that struck me when I opened them - more aromatic than the MH challenger hops I've used before. Could have been a fluke, or perhaps I was simply paying more attention. Anyway, will look forward to seeing how it turns out.

Now what can I use for roach material? :D

I hate to thing what JY smelt like after his visit over here last weekend. He had two carrier bags of loose Goldings (3kg) in the back of his van. He commented that the aroma was quite strong after the short (<5 min) drive from the brewery to my house. His next journey was from Surrey to Plymouth
