Crisp Pale malt
Crisp Pale malt
Hello,
Has anyone used Crisp Pale Malt from Rob at the Malt Miller and if so how do they compare it to the usual malt they use? Certainly is cheap I have heard on radio 4 the Food program ( malt) that a lot of breweries will not us Maris otter because of the cost.

Re: Crisp Pale malt
Only half the batch got infected, my half, the other half was fine, but sadly I didn't get to sample more than about half a pint of it before the Corny went to GARYSMIFF.
The bit I did sample was good, but probably not the best test for the Malt as it was a complete hop monster.

Re: Crisp Pale malt
i hope there will be more people that can say if it's good or not as I'm tempted to get some for it is a nice price.

Re: Crisp Pale malt
Well I've bought a 25kg bag of the Crisp Marris Otter, so it best be good stuff.
Re: Crisp Pale malt
I made a pale ale with the Pale crisp malt from the malt miller about 4 weeks ago and its just starting to come into condition now, the taste is no different from Bairds or Fawcett marris otter i usually buy.
My brewhouse efficiency was 86% so i ended up with a sronger brew than i wanted so make sure you factor that in.

Re: Crisp Pale malt
Ha ha... Dennis it was the Essex/Suffolk/Norfolk heritage that brought me to buy it. One of the maltings is right next to where I used to live in Manningtree. But it arrived and this particular bag came from Norfolk... near enough I suppose!
Re: Crisp Pale malt
I have been told that the malt miller folks freshly mill and crush the grain for you before they ship it.
is the grain crushed as the malt miller people get it from the maltings and then put it in storage like that as pre crushed, or do they open a fresh bag of un crushed malt and when the order comes in they crush it then send it out?
cheers

Unless he's changed the way he does things he crushes all malt prior to dispatch so it's nice and fresh when you get it. You can even ask him to crush a bit finer if it suits your processParabolic wrote:I have been told that the malt miller folks freshly mill and crush the grain for you before they ship it.

He still does this, as you can order it uncrushed.soupdragon wrote:Unless he's changed the way he does things he crushes all malt prior to dispatch so it's nice and fresh when you get it. Re: Crisp Pale malt
Have used Crisp Pale Malt from rob very recently and its very good stuff, I have also used Fawcetts and Bairds (using Bairds pale malt in the morning "Tipple") out of the 3 I would say that the Crisps is the nicest, has less floury bits, and leaves less crud behind, (the Bairds is terrible for crud in the underback).
Give it a go its good stuff, I have found my efficiency is pretty high using the Crisps too.

And the price is better.
Re: Crisp Pale malt
It is interesting to hear people's opinions on this grain. I know the use of varieties other than Maris Otter is nothing new but like a lot of homebrewers I have been a little bit caught up in the MO Hype. When I finally get through my backlog of grain I think a bag of Crisp Pale Malt will be worth a try..
