First Brew

Post by jdoyley » Fri Jan 13, 2012 12:47 pm

Hi guys,

Lots of useful information on here to use. I got a homebrew kit for xmas (Wherry) and it's been in the FV for about 2 weeks, reading two days ago and today stable at 1.012. So it's ready to be kegged. I've read somewhere on here that once kegged it should be in a warm place for a few days then moved somewhere cool. Is this right? Will the garage be too cold to move it to?

Hi, welcome to the forum

Once you keg it, you will need to add some sugar for priming. Approx 85g of sugar will be ideal.

Then you should move somewhere warm for a few days, I would keep it warm for a week, to let the yeast eat up the sugar, producing the CO2 required to carbonate the beer.

You can then move it somewhere cooler, Ideally close to 12C as this is the best drinking temperature for beer, but a little colder or a bit warmer is not really a problem.

Do things freeze in your garage? If so, then yes it may be too cold.

A garage attached to a house shouldn't get too cold, a standalone one though probably would.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Cheers guys.

@ Steve, thanks already looked up on a calculator about sugar which suggested 85g.

@ Jocky, no idea. I'll shove a thermometer in the garage and see what the reading is tomorrow morning.

Well, taking a thermometer in there now and it's 5 degrees C :(

Guess I'll have to find somewhere round the house a bit warmer to put it then.

i'd rather drink it @ 5c then 20c ! (it may get a bit of chill haze but who cares !)

(as long as your not spending the whole evening drinking it in the cold garage; i think that would be bad for your health)

Spare room with radiator off is about 14c. I think that'll be where it ends up.
