Hello,
They are really easy to fit. You drill a 20mm hole, use a 1/2" self centering dowty washer on the outside, and a hex nut as recommended above on the inside. The dowty washes are available on eBay £2ish for 10, and are about 16mm internal diameter. They fit in the gap between the back nut and the thread. When compressed the outer metal washer stops the inner rubber washer from deforming and slipping off the back nut.
Hope it helps - I've fitted 2 like this and neither has leaked yet.

Having tryed the Dowty washer method, I have to say, it's not satisfactory: It doesn't leak, but the there is nothing retaining the thermometer pocket except rubber. A small amout of force will cause the joint to pop open, which is going to be dangerous with boiling liquids.

What type of a boiler do you use John, Stainless or plastic?
I suppose I'm asking what's the wall thickness?

I used two brass reducers, on the inside of the pot a 5/8" to 1/2" reducer with the thread poking through the pot,I then fitted a stainless steel dowty and then a 3/4" to 1/2" reducer, this leaves just enough 1/2" female thread to screw in the thermometer pocket

When you say a reducer what do you mean exactly? (pipe fittings are not my strong point  )

Any chance of a link or pic bumblebee?

Cheers

Sorry my error ...... Inside the pot was a 1/2" to 3/8" reducer and 3/4" to 1/2" on the outside, I'm trying to remember as it's been fitted some time, basically yr screwing the 1/2" threads together

Not sure one of these would work tbh .
I spent 10 mins in my local plumbers today and think I got it cracked.
When I get a spare 10 mins I'll upload a picky of the bits.
Basically its a 1/2 brass sleeve plus a 1/2 threaded connector.
