However my filter blocked up!!!

Could this be because I tried to run off too fast?
Not necassarilly. Try halving the amount next time. Worked for me. Hope that helps.

I used half a tablet, do you think using a quarter may stop the filter blocking?

Yeah, I got the same thing when i first used protfloc tabs. Now i use the powdered stuff brupacs sell. It says to use 1 level tsp on label, but i only use half of one. seems to work better for me.

Try a quarter, see how it goes.

After experimenting I now use 0.7g of the granular Protafloc for a 23 litre brew.

This is 1/4 of a teaspoon according to my (supposedly) accurate cooking measures. Hardly any at all, but it gives me a clear run off from the boiler with no blocking of the hop filter, and clear beer.

I've switched to protofloc from IM and can't really notice any difference TBH. I believe they are both derived from similar sources (seaweed).

Cold break in the FV has never caused me a problem and forced cooling in my experience has had no advantage over natural cooling. I am currently alternating between the 2 and have still to notice any difference in clarity and hop flavour.

before i joined this forum i used hop bags and no filter in the boiler. There was no dead space in the boiler. I used irish moss because thats what i was told to use.
There was naturally a lot of break in the fv. Looked like dish water, but the beer was good.
I've since upgraded my stuff, moved to batch sparge, got a filter etc. Now i have dead space, now i have trub, now i use protofloc, now i have less break in the fv, The beer is still good.
I don't think method is important, enjoyment of brewing and final product is!
