A slightly extreme way around the hosepipe ban.

Post by keith1664 » Mon Mar 26, 2012 8:22 pm

Wanting a definitive answer on whether I will be allowed to run my immersion cooler from a hosepipe I emailed Anglian Water asking the question.
No is the answer, but does anyone need an excuse to go pro?

"Dear Mr Bailey

Thank you for email.

I can confirm that if your use if being taken from a domestic water supply then you will not be able to use a hosepipe for the purpose you have described.

If you bottle and sell any of the beer you produce then it may be worth looking into re classifying your property.

If you pay your water bill as a commercial customer then you would be exempt from the ban. If you would like us to look into reclassifying your account please provide your address or account and we will update any changes required. Alternatively you can arrange the changes by speaking with our call centre on 08457 91 91 55.

I was thinking of getting a large water butt and a pump. My thinking is if I pre-cool the water using ice it should drop the temperature fairly quick and less waste of water too.

I already have a pond pump taking up space in the garage, the one concern I have with the water butt route is that it'll be sitting in full sun (if we get any) and the contents are likely to get rather warm.

With the weather at the moment I would sugest freeze as many 2L pop bottles of water you can (get friends on your street to fill their chest freezers if you can) and then dump them in your water but when you start to sparge!

To be classed as a 'banned' hose pipe does it have to be connected to a dommestic tap?
In other words, could I fill the bath and use my hose pipe out the bathroom window as a syphon to feed my wort chiller?
As far as I can see it's only a hose when connected to a tap, feed it from a bath as mentioned then it becomes a syphon.

...probably still not allowed.

Isn't a hosepipe ban normally worded as 'unattended hose pipe'

just don't leave it alone.

This site may be of use:

No ban in Scotland, though my immersion cooler is plumbed in to the mains via a washing machine hose. Wonder how that set-up would fare?

PS. You're not allowed to wash a private car with a hosepipe, which would be an 'attended' use.

Useful link that. I think I'll look at buying and filling a water butt this weekend in preparation. Submersible pump on order too :)

I have an outside tap fitted inside my brew room, so if there is a hosepipe ban here no body will know any difference :-$

A solution to the hosepipe ban is to buy a few large bottles of water from the supermarket (as many as will fit in your freezer), freeze them then short brew your wort by the same number of ltrs as you've frozen. when flame out time comes, slice the bottles open wit a stanley knife and drop your gigantic ice cubes into the boiler. Provided you've done enough, they'll crash cool the wort and top it back up to the correct level.

So for example, to finish a 20ltr brew at 1.040, you could short brew to 15ltr @ 1.060 then dump in 5ltrs of ice (or equivalent to successfully cool the wort).

Got a submersible pond pump coming now. I'll fill up a spare FV with some of 2 ltr bottles of ice and some water and the chuck the pump in to drive the IC. If it works ok I might continue to use this method in future - save wasting loads of water.

Jeremy Vine on R2 this lunchtime was asking the waterwoman spokeswoman woman how many people have ever been fined for breaching a hosepipe ban?

None.

Is there a phone number people can ring to shop their ban breaking neighbours?

No.

also anyone that has a water butt, can't you just fill the water butt up with the waste water ? =D>

and then reuse the water around the garden or nudge the tap open slightly before bed, so to your horror its empty in the morning

requiring another brew day to fill it back up again :-D

be nice to neighbours bribe them with beer  if absolutely must of course
