BEERWORKS all grain kit question

Post by phill71 » Mon Apr 09, 2012 8:09 pm

Hi to all on the Forum.

I don't know if anyone else has ever tried the BEERWORKS all grain kits, but I've brewed a Timothy Taylor Landlord grain kit on Saturday and after cooling the wort I got a SG of 1040 ( very suprised with myself as kit instructions give target of 1041) and then subsequently pitched the yeast at about 3pm Sat afternoon.

It's now 8:00pm on Mon night, just over 48 hrs later and the Hydrometer reading is suprisingly down to 1012.

The temp in the room has been steadily hovering around 17 - 18c

I would like to know if this seems OK, or has the fermentation happened too fast up to this point, and if not, is the gravity likely to drop any further?

Thanks for any feedback

Phill

Hi Phill,

What yeast did you use? I have had S-04 get down from 1.150 to 1.012 in 48 hours before. Two to three days is not uncommon for a ferment but I leave it longer (a week at least) so that the yeast can clear up after itself.
:D
If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

it does happen this way sometimes ive had a couple go down to that in less time ,it may go lower but you got to give it time out to do it,s thing anyway give it the required time and retest before bottling......well done and good luck

Cheers Horatio

Thanks for reply, I used a sachet of S-04 yeast too.

Is it a decent yeast (whatever that means)!

I have had this happen a couple of times and it doesn't seem to be an unusual result S-04 is a good reliable yeast and I usually have a pack in the fridge for emergencies.

Hope the brew turns out well.

Happy to help! :D
It's a fairly neutral yeast I find but very reliable and gives consistent results. I use it a lot as I have formulated my beers and water profile to get what I want from it. I do use other yeasts too but S-04 is my dependable yeasty chum!
