Raisin Beer - Kit Enhancement?

Post by Secue » Mon Jul 09, 2012 8:29 am

Hi Guys

I've had Caine's Fine Raisin Beer before, and thought it was not bad, but was thinking that I might try and make a raisin beer...only with more flavour to it.

So, i've had a look around the net etc, some people seem to boil up raisins, strain, then add to primary, some people just chop them up and add to primary, some people seem to do either of these but to secondary.

I was looking at maybe about 500g of sun-maid raisins, as they are the only ones i can see that dont have vegetable oil in them, cheaper supermarket own brands contain oil.

Has anyone tried this before? what were your experiences etc?

try using Special B malt, that gives a distinctive raisin flavour.

Nobody ever used actual raisins then?

My first wife used to make rice and raisin wine. I remember she got the raisins from the LHBS. He had a cardboard box of the things knocking about.

When I was in Hull, I used to buy them from a green grocers shop too ~ to feed to the starlings. They too got them in a big, cardboard box.

What I'm saying is; That's gonna be a far cheaper source that piddly little boxes on Sun Maid. And I'd very much doubt there'd be anything added to them either.

Cheers Big Secue!
Looks like a great recipe. I'll check back for video 2 to see how it goes, but I think I'll have a crack at that once I've finished the current kit, and made my daughter some Turbo Cider I promised her. The HomeBreFest looked a great night. I've had a few good nights in Dundee myself, when I've been up on business. Once got lost trying to find my way back to the Queens Hotel. Took me a while to realise the big building with "Queens Hotel" written on it might be the one!
cheers
