The Muntons gets my vote.
I've done it a few times and have never had a bad result. Always seems to go down well with guests.
I usually brew it short to 18 litres for an extra bit of kick.

As for stout...Well unless you've got something special in mind (such as an Imperial Stout), then why bother for Christmas when there are so many great Christmas beers available.

I made up the Winter Warmer a month ago, with some fruit and spices added. I'd say it'll be a belter, had a taste after two weeks and I was very enthused.

What fruit and spice did you use and how did you add it? I'm thinking of doing a muntons winter warmer and kegging it to keep for Christmas.

Lee; I'm going to hand out a couple of kegs of " Xmass Stout " this year. Dead easy. I'll just make a couple of buckets of Coopers, exactly as I always do. Only, I'll make them to just 3 gallons.

Ready inside a week and, I assure ye, will f**k your f**king head up!

Juiced and zested two oranges and two lemons.
Added some nutmeg, cinnamon, all spice, ginger and a couple handfulls of cloves. A cup of soft brown sugar too, and a couple handfuls of mixed fruit (raisins, sultana, currants etc.) Glug of brandy for luck! Boiled it for about 45 minutes, and strained it. Added it to the FV.

It's starting out at 1.060, so it's going to be a good bit stronger than I was aiming for...

That's interesting I'll try something similar for my Christmas brew.

I should give you an update.

I left it in the FV for 2 weeks, and it came down to 1.014, 6% odd. Also, I used Safale SO4, because I've had trouble with Munton's yeast before.

After two weeks in the bottle I'm very happy. It's called "Winter Warmer" and I think that's definitely what it'll be. I have it in the shed now and I'll try one a month 'til 1st December!

No, mate. I just made it absolutely as normal. Only, I got amongst it before I realised I'd never topped it up with water!

Tasted like ' Stout Spirit ' and absolutely ripped my f**king head off!!! Image

My mate declared it absolutely The Best thing I'd ever produced. I think I then finished that pint ~ my third, at that point. That would have been when I climbed onto my horses back and declared myself a Cowboy! Everything gets a bit vague after that .....

For last Christmas I did a Cooper's Stout with the usual 1kg of medium spray malt, plus a small tin (454g?) of Lyle's Black Treacle and a grated 500g ginger root, which was brilliant.

Hmm, you're the second person who's said that to me so I'm doubting myself now! I didn't write it down at the time. I thought I'd remembered right, and it was a good siezed ginger root but...!
