Finally Bottled

Post by GarethT » Tue Jul 31, 2012 5:54 pm

Hi Guys

I have finally bottled my first homebrew lager :D

A quick question, I sampled the lager while bottling and found it to be very watery in texture and taste.

Will it become thicker during the secondary fermentation/carbonation stage?

Also if the online calculators are correct, the end alcohol % will be around 3%. Seems a bit low.

OG was 1040
FG was 1018

It was a Coopers Australian lager kit.

Thanks

Gareth

Did you make it with sugar, spaymalt or beer kit enhancer? I ask cos it will make a big difference to mouth feel and body. If it was sugar you used it will be watery.

@crafty john I made it with 500kg of Sugar and 5kg of Malt, this was advised by the local homebrew shop to improve the taste :S

@markle I will try it again, once my next batch has finished. Daft question, but whats BKE?

Hi Gareth

How long was it in the FV?

Are you sure it was 1.018, because that sounds too high an FG for the fermentables that you mention.

MB
FV:

Conditioning:
AG#41 - Vienna Lager - 5.6%
AG#42 - Heritage Double Ale - 10.5%

On Tap:

Now you mention it, I think I've gotten my reading wrong :S

I think it was actually 1.008, just outside the beer strip on my hydrometer.

Sorry for the mistake & confusion

It was in for 2 weeks.

Should it look flat in the bottles?

Yes, but you do need to leave it a little longer for "warm" conditioning and then some really cold conditioning (under 4c) for the CO2 to go into solution.
I am "The Little Red Brooster"

Fermenting:
Conditioning:
Drinking: Southwold Again,

Up Next: John Barleycorn (Barley Wine)
Planning: Winter drinking Beer

Sorry to go a little off topic, but, I have a EDME German lager thats been in the bottle over a week now, the sediment is really whispy and as soon as I lift a bottle to the light to see how its clearing the sediment it starting to move and float about. Also it seems to be collecting on the sides of the bottle which Ive never seen before. This is my first lager and my ales Ive done have had a compact solid sediment after only a week.

Cheers for any info, and sorry for the hijack :D

Still find it amazing how almost every LHBS always advises newbies to use this that and the other, which make it ten times more complicated (I am on my ermm 8th-10th brew and only just started looking into using speciality grains) honestly probably just to get a bit more money in, sigh.

Hope the beer turns out okay, honestly your gravity sounds strange, I doubt the beer was done at 1.018 tbh and comparing that to the OG it will likely be a pretty weak drink, but not everyone cares about that, but the issue is, if it isn't done fermenting your bottles could explode.

Lol, I was more concerned with the 500kg of sugar that was used, must be 1 huge FV ;)

Do you know if the kit contained a proper lager yeast, because IME s-23 does the whole whispy thing in the bottle, and can really spoil an overprimed bottle as it gets lifted into the brew when opened!

Havent got a clue what yeast, only info I can find is apparently its an ale yeast. Bit dissapointed as normally Im drinking after a week in the bottle, but looks like I'll have to leave this a little longer and hope it settles, off on hols on Sunday for 11 days so hopefully be some change when I get back, if not I'll be drinking cloudy yeasty lager

Cheers
