Dry Hopping
Dry Hopping
I've just transferred an EDME Bitter to a secondary FV.Somebody as given me a pack of Saaz hops and some target hops, could I use one of these to dry hop.cheers
Re: Dry Hopping
Target is considered to be a high alpha hop that is primarily used for bittering, I'd be hesitant to dry hop with it.
You could dry hop with Saaz, they are considered delicate and a little spicy, but it would depend on what results you want for your beer and what you want from the dry hopping process.

Re: Dry Hopping
i haven't used target hops before, i think most people use them for bittering due to the high alpha acid content. I don't think they are rated as aroma hop so i don't know if i would personally use them for dry hopping.
i would definitely use the saaz though; i'd probably start with 30g this time around and see how you fare.
If you have any muslin / nylon bags those would be ideal, if not anything made of either, some people use tights / socks as a receptacle although make sure any cloth used is sanitized before hand. I will usually sanitize and then boil the fabric before use.
just fill and then dump in the fv for 3 days upwards; i usually go for about about 7, then bottle/keg as usual.

A Beersmith interview with a USA hop grower suggests that a couple of days is sufficient to dry hop, take a look here.simon50 wrote:

I've just dry hopped with 30 grams of Bobek and 20 g of Summit and it stinks after 24 hours!!! Will leave it for two days as it will be plenty
