Adding bits to kits

Post by jimmybobbird » Tue Aug 14, 2012 9:08 pm

Sorry if this is a duplication of a previous question - it is a bit basic.......

Is it possible to add other ingredients to an extract kit? E.g. Ginger, Honey, Chocolate, Chilli(?) or extra malt.

When should you add this extra bits (if it is allowed)? Do I need to make sure it has no contamination - how should I do this?

Like I say - apologies for basic questions.

There are various methods to adding bits to kits, I add malts and hops to mine. I boil water and add DME , once it disolves I add hops and continue the boil., let it sit for a bit after turning the heat off and strain it in to the FV.

No probs with experimenting - the golden rule is sanitisation - always try to keep infection to a minimum - I've added jam and honey to kits but you may be better boiling anything to kill the nasties. Good luck!!

What kit are you planning to use as a base for your tweaks and what style ale are you trying to create?

Cheers

Just take care with this post!

It started my slippery slope into the world kit adaptations, extract & BIAB AG brewing

It's a great illustrated guide though :D

I suppose if you aren't aiming for any particular style of brew, then whatever you create will be spot on

Geezah is pretty much to blame for me turning simple kits into lots of faffing, him and that bloody Monkeybrew fella.
