toucan lager not clearing AT ALL
need a bit of advice folks. Have a toucan in pb made from Youngs definitive kit and john bull lager kits full weight mixed, and a starter made from rehydrated yeast from both kits. didnt add much in the way of extra sugars maybe 200g, ( crap practise not to record but was a hurry brew!) SG dropped to 1020, stuck then after a rousing dropped to 1016 so i racked to the pb and added a pack of finings. That was three weeks ago. Two weeks a go thought I'd have a look and was clear as mud. So added the two pack wine finings from wilkos. Then primed. Today still muddy as buggery but with lovely head!! Anyone able to help?? Really unattractive looking beer, I can bottle it if That might make it condition a bit quicker ie this millenium!!
Just like trying new ideas!

Re: toucan lager not clearing AT ALL
Why the finings and shouldn't you prime then bottle not leave it sitting in the bucket for another week otherwise you'll restart the fermentation I'm a 3 brew nooob to

Re: toucan lager not clearing AT ALL
was using pb as a secondary fermentation vessel./ then to continue as serving vessel hence fining then priming.

Re: toucan lager not clearing AT ALL
You may be too impatient. Many of my brews don't clear properly in a pb until at least 6 weeks. That's why I usually leave all my brews for 8-12 weeks before drinking them and some for much longer.
I have had the odd Wherry kit that has never quite cleared but it still tasted grand.

Re: toucan lager not clearing AT ALL
I was kinda hoping for that response. Have also had a few brews that took a while, to the extent that i finally bottled them so i could use the pb. Guess I'll just have to suck it and see. Incidentally gos where do you get your supplies? I heard the Dove LHBS in Ipswich was half decent, but in case you didnt know there is a decent LHBS in Diss now straight up via Debenham and Eye for you. Will edit a link in for you

I never knew there was a homebrew shop in Diss. I'll have to seek it out, as it's under a 30 minute drive up the A140. I may pop in there on Friday or Saturday if I have the time, just to see what it's like.timbo41 wrote:I was kinda hoping for that response. I have found the Dove LHBS to be very good, but even though it's only around 8 or 9 miles away I prefer to avoid Ipswich if I can so I don't go there very often.
As my job takes me all over the Eastern Counties and the Midlands I tend to visit many different homebrew shops on my travels. The two 'local' shops that I use most often are Colchester Homebrew Supplies on the Severalls Industrial Estate (25 miles away) and the Goodlife Homebrew Centre in Norwich (35 miles away). However, they are both very well stocked and the service is very good.
A trip to Diss would be a doddle by comparison. If I manage to visit 'You Can Brew' I'll let you know how I get on there.
Thanks

Re: toucan lager not clearing AT ALL
Managed to call into 'You Can Brew It' in Diss this afternoon. Looking in from the outside I wasn't expecting to much, but on entering I was surprised to find a good range of kits - mainly Munton's 1 & 2 can kits, but also Woodfordes, Brewmaker, Brewferm, Coopers and Toohey kits were available. I bought a Brewmaker IPA kit (one of my favourite 1 can kits) some crown caps and some new tubing for syphoning.
I will visit there again. It's a handy place to know of if I'm in the area. Also, my wife enjoyed shopping in the high street/market place area and wants to return there on a regulalr basis. That's as good a reason as any to go back there.

Re: toucan lager not clearing AT ALL
yep its not bad a bit pricier than some but for me easy to get to. Theres also Harts homebrew on Bury street in stowmarket, which has a modest range. Hops there are very expensive IMHO

Re: toucan lager not clearing AT ALL
I often pop into Hart's Homebrew in Stowmarket - it's the nearest shop to me. They are the cheapest place I know for brewing sugar (dextrose) and Hambleton Bard S30 gas refills. I usually buy my Woodforde and Milestone kits there as they are very competitively priced. However, the rest of the range is constantly changing and you can never be sure that you will get what you want when you visit - it can be a bit of a lucky dip.timbo41 wrote:yep its not bad a bit pricier than some but for me easy to get to.
