How much stars an in a Fv

Post by sbond10 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 9:43 pm

Just wondered how much starsan and treated water would you need to clean an Fv. Also if I made up 5 litres of starsan how long would it last and what could I store it in and finally what's the cheapest water I could use ?
And I don't currently have a bottle sprayer to spray inside a bottles how could I get in and how much to use for each bottle ?
Sorry if this is the millionth time you've answered this

I use 1.33mls of starsan per litre cold water in a spray bottle to wet surfaces for ~2mins. I forget where I calculated this from but think I erred on the side of caution re the dosage and contact time. Prior to this I have cleaned the freshly emptied fermenter with hot water/soda crystals/kitchen towel.

There are many ways to skin a cat but I'll stand behind this regime on plastic bucket fermenters with an additional descaling every once in a while.

Without a spray bottle that's what I would do.

Actually it's only in the 900,000's :D

I make up around 25 litres at a time and store it in a plastic document box. This way I can put everything that comes into contact with the wort post boil or pour into the FV prior to run off. Once I have made it up I just dunk the sprayers in (I use another for spraying into bottles after pouring and rinsing) to fill them up. I usually keep it like this for a month or so.

I mix starsan at 1.6ml per litre.

I find 100ml or so shook up in a fv seems to create lots of foam and cover the whole inside, also dont forget to turn the fv upside down, this gets in all the difficult to reach places around the lid perimiter.

Also dont pour the foam out, just fill the fv as normal, this seems to leave a protective layer of foam over the beer (and its supposed to be yeast food too).

So if I made a a litre batch up each time and throw 100mls into it and shake like my life depends on it it should be ok ? Also how do you measure such a tiny amount out.
Also with the bottles could I get a spray bottle and just swuirt like 2-3 sprays inside and shake
Any ideas what water to use

It's best to put in a sprayer and use as you describe. You need a low alkalinity water so get some bottled water from the supermarket.

I have very hard water so I use Tesco Ashbeck ~ £1.10 for 5L.
Just add 8ml of starsan to the 5L water and you have 5L of sanitiser..
