Molasses
Re: Molasses
That sounds like it'll be a bit too strong. Far too strong actually. I've never used straight molasses, but going by this http://www.unholymess.com/blog/beer-bre ... ers-invert where they use 100g of molasses with 400g of invert to make 500g of really strong flavoured brewing syrup, I think you might have a molasses beer rather than a stout
I'd await the more knowledgeable folk on here before taking my view as gospel though

Re: Molasses
I suspect you may be correct. I should have done more research on this, before adding ingredients I'm not familiar with. My own fault if it's a disaster.
Re: Molasses
Well just let it finish then taste, it might still be a good drink even if it isn't what you were aiming for. Even if it isn't great you could brew another coopers stout with just DME/LME added, then blend the two together (take small samples and try different ratios of the two) and you might well end up with a really interesting stout. There lies the beauty of homebrew.
And if it's complete arse just put it down to experience, we've all been there.

Re: Molasses
Very true, I think the best way of learning, is by mistakes. Hopefully it's still drinkable, but I'm a bit of a pessimist, ha
Re: Molasses
Yep, I think you may have overdone it. Molasses/ black treacle are very dominant flavours. However, you may like it (or may force yourself to like it!). Several decades ago I messed about too much with a stout recipe, resulting in a beer with almost no body and a very dominant burnt taste. It wasn't one for a session but by the end of the barrel I had grown accustomed to it, hehe.

I think so too. I have an old ale recipe that calls for only 120 grams (12 liter batch).Hanglow wrote:That sounds like it'll be a bit too strong. Far too strong actually.
I'm just here for the beer.

Re: Molasses
Nigel; I love Black Strap Molasses in my tea. Teaspoon of that instead of sugar. I thinks it's great.
So, one time I was wondering about it in my beer. I poured a pint of my stout and stirred a teaspoon into that.
Took one sip and threw it down the drain.

I'm fairly new to this forum, but if Ditch says '..took one sip and threw it down the drain' then it can't be a good sign! That said, adding molasses at the end as Ditch did may impart a much different flavour than allowing it to ferment out.
I still agree with everyone else though!

No. Seriously; It had never since occurred to me that fermentation must drag the guts out of an ingredient. How many of us would dump a load of DME into a glass of water and consider that " Mouth Feel " ?

Thanks!

Re: Molasses
Hi
Put a whole tin of treacle in a Scottish Export once. Beautiful smell and clear as a bell ,shame about the taste.
