what size pot

Post by paulg » Mon Dec 31, 2012 8:53 pm

I currently brew with a 3 vessel setup but am thinking of trying a BIAB
I have the choice of 2 stainless pots 70 litres and 100 litres that I could convert,I want to brew 25 litres and also have the option of upto say 45 litres (2 cornies worth)
I am not sure which pot would be better suited bearing in mind that the 100 litre one has a diameter of 50 cm and with a 25 litre brew would it cover the element properly
any advice on this and element sizes required to boil gratefully recieved

surface area of the base of a 50cm diameter cylinder is (3.14 x 25 x 25) cm2 = 1962.5cm2; 1 litre is 1000cm3, so 1cm deep is 1.9625 (1962.5/1000) litres so 25 litres would be about 12.7cm (5in) deep.

I can't advise on elements though, I use a stove-top pan on our gas hob.

I have had another thought about this I do also have a 40 litre buffalo urn I could use but I am leaning towards the 70 litre pot as I think that that would give the option of both 25 litres and 40 litres(1 or 2 cornies ).
I just ned to work out element sizes
come on someone must be using these size pots for BIAB
