Buying small quantities
Buying small quantities
I love porters and stouts but only drink them in the colder months. I was thinking of brewing a porter to see me through feb/march but with ingredients being 100g of this and 150g of that, it seems a waste to have to buy 3 or 4 kg bags knowing that they'll be well past their best by the time porter brewing season comes round again in 8-9 months time.
Are there any suppliers that sell smaller quantities of special malts? Even 500g bags would be an improvement.

Re: Buying small quantities
Some suppliers will make up a pack of grains based on your recipe. I believe there are a few members on here who use Worcester Hop Shop and a couple of other suppliers that offer that service. I think they will also include the hops and yeast that you need. Not sure if they split the packs of hops though...
Re: Buying small quantities
Couldn't find anyone offering to make up your recipe but did find one or two offering 500g bags of the grain I require. Unfortunately they're only 5-10p cheaper than the 1kg bags from Malt Miller and the postage is higher! I may as well just order the kg bags and hope it all lasts until next winter.
Re: Buying small quantities
I keep all my grains/malts for longer than a year and have never had a problem, just make sure the bags are well sealed and keep them in an airtight bucket or tub, in a cool dry place, I have some 3 year old amber that is still fine.bigdave wrote:Couldn't find anyone offering to make up your recipe but did find one or two offering 500g bags of the grain I require. Rob's a star, if he can do it he will, which says a lot for an online retailer. I have dealt with him a few times and he is always happy to accommodate your requestbigdave wrote:Yep. Re: Buying small quantities
On a sort of similar vein would anyone care to provide a simple stock cupboard type list of versatile grains that can be used in dfferent brews...a.variety pack if you will?
Excluding the big boys like pale malt, lager malt etc, I reckon this could really help new ag brewers like me.

Just like trying new ideas!
Re: Buying small quantities
No worries. I reckon a stock list is a bit difficult as it all comes down to personal taste. Certainly a sack of pale malt & a couple of kg of crystal will always be a useful staple.

The hop and grape will supply any measurement you want for grain ... and some hops...
