Time Heals

Post by Nigel1969 » Thu Jan 31, 2013 9:15 pm

After chucking my first ever brew down the drain, a Coopers Bitter. I found a couple of bottles in the shed last night, they've been 6 weeks, and I tried one last night. To my surprise, they were actually ok, not great, but definitely drinkable. Wish I'd kept them all now, just thought the taste was so bad 2 weeks ago, I'd never drink them. A big lesson has been learned here. Time can improve a bad brew.

It depends on what sort of bad but, yes, never be too quick to dump a beer. You've done most of the work by the time you sample it so there is not much to loose by tucking it away somewhere to see if it gets better.

Precisely! When I kicked off again, I came here and talking about the 'Off Tastes' ( TCP. Metallic. Acidic. Christ knows what else) seemed all the rage back then.

So, what did I do? Knocked up a " Ditch's Stout ". Tasted it, after five days, without a heater. Convinced myself I could detect TCP. Drained it!

F**king idiot! I'd allowed myself to be victim of mass hysteria.

Gave up fussing. Made another one. Never looked back Image

Saying that, of course? If, when ye suck the tube to syphon it, ye wish to god ye'd never been born? Then it's the drain cleaner it tastes like!

I think you have a valid point for the hysteria thing. I'm probably not the only one that tries to pick out the worst taste possible, and wonder what it means, instead of leaving it to mature and then enjoying it. From now on, if it doesn't taste like genuine cats piss, I'm drinking it.

Strange stuff floating on top / in it. Off smells. Movement / Lack of movement in the wort. Airlock not bubbling (If I shove that f**king airlock far enough up, I assure ye it'll f**king bubble!) Instructions on the can said. Hydrometer readings say .....

Honestly, Nigel ..... Man has been getting absolutely f**king slaughtered, on probably fine tasting and 'Real' Ales, for thousands of years now. It, quite possibly, started with an animals bladder of grain, left hanging somewhere when it rained. Then being discovered by someone after the sun had shone for a bit.

They were thirsty. Found there was throat wet in that swollen bladder. Slaked their thirst and headed home. Determined to shag the skin off their own Mother In Law.

Thus man discovered Beer! Image

I have had 4 brews where i tasted from the fv and thought, feck that, this is getting dumped, each time i just bottled it and hoped for the best

So far i have never ditched a brew, even when i made them and they wern't the best, they were drank

Don't expect miracles, nor exceptional brews, you will have something that will pass and get you pissed
