Hi Guys,I've just got my first kit on the go in my nice new bucket, its coopers lager which i'm not expecting to taste like ice cold labbats but i might get a pleasant surprise, just got a couple of questions which are probably daft but i'll ask anyway here goes...

1,Can you add extra yeast to speed things up?,And can they be different?
2,Is it possible to buy just the cans of malt extract for lager,if so any recommendations
3,Can you add things to your wort, for example if i wanted to make a nice lager with a bit of a lemon taste could i for example add lemon curd?-I realise this is probably blasphemy but if you don't ask you never find out...Thanks for your replies in advance....Dave

Welcome to the forum, I have only done one brew and that was a coopers lager which turned out to be toilet cleaner ha ha so I have not yet the experience to help you . But if you look through the other forums you will surely find somebody who has done kit additions and also some of the other guys will help you. My next brew which is a Canadian blonde is now sat in bottles conditioning. Only another 7 days to go then I an stick one in fridge to see what it's like, good luck.

Newbrew,
If you are drinking water, don`t forget your sanitizing process or that might be toilet cleaner as well! (Sorry, Couldn`t resist)!

firstly, welcome to the forums and the world of homebrewing.

to answer your questions.

1, yes you can add more yeast but it wont necessarilly speed up the process and should only be done if your fermentation sticks. there is a whole category dedicated to yeasts, but i would suggest sticking with the same one as you used. there is other things you can do should the fermentation stick.

2. almost all home brew shops sell the cans of malt extract, you can also buy them in places like tesco, wilkinsons and a few other shops. i recommend visiting a local home brew shop, they are an aladdings cove of wonders, usually with helpful staff.

3. yes it is possible to add stuff to your brew, many people do. as long as the item in question contains no preservatives then you will be fine. i would suggest adding a drop of lemon juice to a couple of bottles when bottling rather than doing the whole batch in case it doesn't work out.

hope this helps.

For lemon flavor I usually use lemon zest. Although for my latest batch of lemon-rosemary blonde ale I added some home made lemon extract at bottling.
I'm just here for the beer.
