Malt Volume

Post by darkonnis » Thu Jun 06, 2013 5:42 pm

Has anyone any idea roughly how much space a 25kg sack of malt takes up? I'm going to buy some plastic tubs to store it in but I don't want to buy one only to find I can't get a full sack in! I haven't actually got any malt at the minute so I can't check and having discovered a slight leak in my garage I don't really want to put anythign in there that can't withstand a bit of wet.
Cheers

Just measured my 25kg sack of Crisp, crushed MO. Sort of a cylinder, about 60cm high and 35cm diameter.

Or put another way.. I've found a kilo of crushed malt to have a volume of approx 2 litres

I split mine into 5x5gks in large freezer bags and store them in a large kitchen flip bin. Takes a lot of the hassle out of weighing and reduces potential of fine particles flying all over the garage floor come brew day.

You also know when your down to your last 5kg bag you ought to order another sack! Must admit, I'm a bit unorganised as previous to that I was scraping the bottom of the bin for the last of the grain for a brew to find I was a hundred or so grammes short and having to alter my recipe!

I find 3 and a bit pallets fit quite snuggly into a 20ft shipping container!

seriously though a 50-60l food bin will store it in a grand fashion

Well according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushel) a bushel of malted barley occupies 36.4 litres and weighs 15.4kg. Therefore scaling up to 25kg works out at 59litres.

Since I've developed a healthy respect for the creatures of the night over the years I keep mine in a standard sized galvanised metal dustbin. This has space for a 25kg sack of malt along with several smaller bags of crystal and other malts and a few packs of hops. It works well, but I'm not sure how waterproof it would be. I do keep some other grains in the workshop, but these are blue and come in a plastic container with 'Rentokill' printed on the side.

Aaaaaaaagh! Wanted to store 25kg in the sack in a barrel so bought a "60 litre" barrel on ebay. When it arrived I thought "that looks small". Manafacturers marks were on the bottom so measured it up, cross referenced the very informative Manafacturers website- 50 litres. Grrrrr.... If I had wanted a 50 litre barrel I would have bought one- paid about 50÷ extra to get a 60 as well! Usual ebay/paypal thing will sort it but I'll be out of pocket for return postage costs and its a right royal pain in the arse. The eBay seller sells hydroponic stuff- perhaps they had been a bit busy testing their product :(

BenB dont fret.. if its a ex mango barrel type blue hdpe jobby 25kg of grain will fit in, Just.. u need to fill 90% full and tap the barrel a bit to encourage the grain to settle a bit then you can top up and get the full sack in.. i manages to squeeze a 25kg sack of crushed grain in mine..
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..

You can take 5kg out like N&C does. :)

I keep mine in a 60l Really Useful box I got once when they were doing a sale.
Never enough time...

N&C - the guy above, NorfolknChance.

I've opted for 80L boxes and it just or say goes in without taking it out the sack.

Sounds a plan- would prefer not to have to open the sacks, especially when I don't know what's been in the barrel!!!! I suspect 80L boxes will be better for stacking, in my brewshed space is a premium!
