I was wondering if anyone has a better idea for growing hops at home?

You could try the arch method...bit fiddly to get going but so easy to harvest Image

Or just let the buggers run wild and free Image

That's a lot of hops.

I zigzag mine up a trellis. I'll post a picture tomorrow if I remember. Ideally you should put them in the ground though... Those pots are way too small.

The only trouble is that they'll spread like mad, if planted in the ground.

Only if you leave them unchecked BA. As for the pots they are fine for 2 or 3 years but after they will outgrow them, you will find out usually when its too late as they wont grow to full height and have a very small harvest. I replanted my Bramling X in the Spring, it had resided in a butler sink for 4 years, so I split it and now have 4 very good plants instead of 1, as well as some rhizome stock for next year.

It's the roots that spread, so they're not easy to keep in check...
