How do your mills cope with the odd stone that turns up in sacks of malt? Or do you only mill specialty grains which seem a lot 'cleaner'? The rollers on my Barley Crusher can seize instantly because of this. I wouldn't choose an automated system because of this, unless there was some clutch/slip ability in there.

The motor should just stop, i cant see it doing any damage, unless you dont notice and you then burn the motor out?

Chances are the build im doing will use 2 pulleys and a belt so that should slip, to be honest its not a problem that has been mentioned in any of the US build threads?

Cheers

Everthing is attached to a piece of wood and I sit it on a plastic bucket. The hopper holds around 6Kg of grain and even when empty balances perfectly on the bucket. The PSU is quite light but the motor is very heavy and the mill also. Has never looked like falling.

Hi golden brewer, I have a MashMaster MiniMill from http://mashmaster.com.au which has a 1/2 inch shaft. What size shaft does the electric bike motor from Hong Kong have? I guess it will be metric. Can I get a Lovejoy or Spider coupling that will join the electric bike motor to the Mashmaster Minimill? Because your solution looks the most simple and convenient! Cheers.

Chris,
The shaft on the bike motor is around 10mm and is threaded with a chain sprocket attached. I removed the sprocket and got a coupling that fitted it. The shaft on my mill is 3/8 inch. With the spider coupling you can get different sizes to fit different sized shafts. So in other words, you get one side of the spider coupling to match your mill shaft, and the other side of the spider coupling to fit the bike motor and the two halves of the spider coupling mate together. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks golden brewer, looks nice and simple! So simple in fact that I might be able to make it myself! Cheers.

Any further advance on your purchase? I`ve noticed they have just updated the model again.

Barneey,

Progress is slow, Just moved house and set brewery backup in new place and then had to go back to work!

Decided to try and find a small stainless table on wheels to mount it on failing that i will get the frame made and the put a oak top on it, fingers crossed its going to be up and running in 6 or 7 weeks time.

Just looked at the new model, looks like a more sturdy design for locking the roller. will pass judgment on the one i have when i get it working.
