This is a subject which interests me too.

If you start piling in loads of late addition American hops you'll have an American style beer rather than a British one so just substituting some flavour hops with American ones would be worth a a try to get some different flavours into some British recipes.

I certainly intend mixing some Amarillo or Citra in with a a recipe in the future.

Isn't that the definition of every American ale ever brewed? :)

Adnam's do quite a few british ales with american hops. Try searching for a recipe for Discovery. Also Oakham ales Bishop's Farewell is Cascade through and through.

Except for steam beer, light American lager (yuck), Kentucky common, and I'm sure there are others; the ones that we did that to from Germany and others places.
I'm just here for the beer.

American hops have been used in British beers pretty much since brewery records are available. A mild of the 1830s would have often had a wide range of hops from Goldings and other British hops to German Spalt and American hops. American hops came early on from the Eastern states and later from Oregon and California. If you want to go true-to-style in a sort of weird reinvented traditional way try to use Cluster every now and then.

Modern British beers that use American hops... you get Williamette in St Austell's Tribute, Cascade in Brains SA Gold and St Austell's Proper Job, lots of the Otley's and Oakham's. Just got a bottle of Devon Dreamer that had a tad of Citra mixed in with lots of EKG and that worked out ok (but could have had two tads of Citra instead of one).

Hops that are fairly safe to mix with fairly ordinary British styles: Williamette (a citrusy Fuggles with less skunk), Columbus (skunk, some pine, good bittering hop), Cascade (fragrant, not too harsh), Amarillo (floral and fruity), Cluster (more hoppy and less fruity than Cascade, quite balanced), Nugget (herbal, floral, clean bittering), Chinook (grapefruit and pine needles, good as a late addition but can be overpowering boiled more than 10 minutes). The ones that I think can be overkill unless carefully added: Simcoe, Centennial, Citra, Ahtanum, Apollo, Mosaic, Summit. You might also want to consider Liberty, Crystal or Mount Hood, but you'll be getting a bit closer in character to traditional German hops. I do like them, though, they leave plenty of that "fresh hop" aroma with a gentle amount of fruit. A British ale dry hopped with generous quantities of Mount Hood would be a good idea.

You could also brew a single hop bitter or golden ale with Williamette, Amarillo, Cluster or Nugget and still be able to make it taste fairly British if you keep the additions low and use the right yeasts and malts. A Bengal Lancer replacing the Target for Nugget could be pretty tidy.

On the subject of Adnams, try Ghost Ship. Very nice.

Discovery is Fuller's. Adnams do Exporer which is along the same lines. Blonde with some American hops.

You are of course correct. I'm not sure why I always get those two confused!

Hi Lee

I am thinking of brewing a Landlord clone, and replacing the late Styrians for the same quantity of Ahtanum.

MB
FV:

Conditioning:
AG#41 - Vienna Lager - 5.6%
AG#42 - Heritage Double Ale - 10.5%

On Tap:
AG#44 - Harvest ESB - 5.4%
AG#45 - Amarillo Gold APA - 5.2%

Cascade and challenger work beautifully and allows for some late hopping
