Re: Dairy Plate Chiller
What is quite interesting on this plate is the primary and secondary seals to the flow / return pipework, the minus point is there are quite a few areas were bugs could grow if cleaning wasnt carried out correctly.
One experiment I want to do is to use the plate with wort, back flush - forward flush clean (cant bake as it has rubbers) then open the thing up a week later to see what the inside looks like.

Re: Dairy Plate Chiller
looking good there.. the experiment would be revealing regardless of the results.
wouldnt using a few spacers be easier and less risky than re-threading the bolts?
how do you set the seal evenly i cant decode anything looking like a torque guide on the label?

Re: Dairy Plate Chiller
Well it gave me further pause for thought as to how easily plate chillers are at getting all sorts of nasties lurking in their murky depths. Being able to bake mine has made me feel more comfortable, even though when I do I'm still amazed at what comes out of what appears to be a wort free piece of kit. To wit:TC2642 wrote:Doesn't look in bad nick, what sort of quantity of wort are you looking to cool down?

This happens every time I've baked it so far

Re: Dairy Plate Chiller
Interesting thread, I`m still cleaning the plate at the moment andd then will try it out. Only way I can think of to try the seals is to fill one side of the plate with water and seal off the ends - then check the other side of the plate to see if there is any moisture getting across the seals. Test again in reverse to make sure ?
Another test might be to pump through one side for say 30mins then check for moisture the otherside.

Do you have a pressure guage? I would blank off one end, pressure up one side and lock in the pressure with a ball valve. Leave for an hour or 2 and see if any of the pressure bleeds off.barneey wrote:Interesting thread, I`m still cleaning the plate at the moment andd then will try it out. Just in the last stages of putting the plate back together again then to test the thing, with help from another member I know the torque settings.

It's a shame you didn't think to number all of those bits. It will take you ages to get them into the correct order.

I labeled them using the chinese alphabet with a washable marker pen so putting the plate back together will be very easy to do whilst blindfolded in my birthday suit and one hand tied behind my back, but thanks for the concern
