I think the problem might be that welding is an art that you can't learn in a weeks course. It takes years to master right??

I fear that without an apprenticeship it's something I may never learn. My old man can weld, only arc, but he's reluctant to teach me... Anything really.

If ye can gas weld you will pick up tig welding easily aye I agree the more practice the better especially on the thinner material, if ye have determination anything is achievable.

My heat exchanger arrived this morning spot the deliberate mistake. I will have to extend the 3/4 bsp socket so the RJT fittings do not collide.

I think there is probably enough bits online to learn how to weld. Of course, like learning anythign it would be a far cry from doing an actual course in welding. But I reckon you could learn the basics then its just a case of practice practice practice... Would certainly be cheaper to just go and buy a cheap welder (of your desired choice) and simply teach yourself using off cuts than it would be to go on a course. Wouldn't be quicker and it would be harder but it wouldn't be impossible.

Then pass it on to who? would be a pitty not to get any use from it.
My main intention on building this is for my 13yr old son, he is showing an interest in brewing so thought I would build a small scale set up similar or as close to a 5/10bbl manual brewhouse and see if he is willing to spend the day brewing then clean up after the days event even although I shall be receiving the end product.

I honestly don't see welding like that. It's an art and if I did it is want to do it properly. There are a lot of things anybody can do well. I'm not sure anyone can weld.

Well if you think about it, someone somewhere once upon a time way back when invented welding. No one on the planet had ever ever welded before. Then someone, was the first. Of course, things have advanced since then, things have moved on but someone had to teach themselves. If you're willing to put the hours in and look up enough and talk to everyone and anyone with knowledge on the subject, eventually you'll be able to weld well enough to build what you want. Will you be as good as a coded welder? No. Will you be good enough to weld pressure rated tanks? Maybe not. Good enough to weld some bits together? Don't see why not.

There are a lot of things anybody can do well, and this is one of them. Not like you're being asked to produce a 30cm thick syngas reactor. Just takes time, patience and a whole lot of learning.

Leggo land pumps , well my solar pumps arrived today from China, feckin hell I did not realise they were that small they are dwarfed against the 1" RJT fittings I hope they can perform. I am having my doubts they will handle 1" pipe think I will have to look out for something else but will give them a trial first.

the solar pumps are ok with low flow rates circa 2-5l per min depending on the head.
to give u an idea of the performance,////,
mine generated a greater han 2l per min flow rate thru over 10m of 8mm to 10mm id tubing up 1.75m at boiling temps from the kettle thru a chiller into the FV with about an 8V supply from an easy dial tatoo psu. so possibly twice that with more voltage wont win a race gainst a march may pump, but costs a hell of a lot less.. and can be controlled with an ebay tattoo gun psu easily and cheaply.

Those poor solar pumps lol, I quite fancy a pair of chugger pumps with the SS heads cheaper than March and look the nuts...nice vid here (this was my favorite brewery before I read this thread !!)
