Tap damage

Post by HopIt » Wed Mar 05, 2014 8:15 pm

Hi there,

I did a brew and chucked a load of bits and bobs into a large pan of oxi cleaner (from Lidl) whilst I cleaned other stuff. There was plastic, stainless steel, brass and copper in there with a couple of taps. Once I got a minute a few hours later, I discovered my taps appear to have rusted...

Firstly, is this rust or some other reaction? Why did it happen so quickly? And also do you think its enough to just rinse all the other things that were in the pan with the taps?

1. Yup thats rust,
2. it was quick because the tap handles are the only bits which are mild steel and rust is oxidised iron/steel. You put it in a cleaning solution purpose made to oxidise - hence its name
3. Rinsing should be fine, it'll remove any remaining chemical, just remember after rinsing it'll not be sterile, but that may be irrelevant, depends where you use the bits and bobs

Yeah, I knew rust was oxidisation and that an oxi cleaner probably was somehow related, but I wasn't sure why the stainless didn't rust. Cheers for the info.

Now might be a good time to invest in some stainless taps that come apart. I think there is some guy on here who does them, could anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers

There are a few places that do them, including the Malt Miller, but you maybe thinking of Mr Lard here
Best wishes
