Corny Keg with loads of Beer Stone

Post by perryni » Sun Apr 06, 2014 9:41 am

I have just got a second hand corny but unfortunately is got what I presume is beer stone all over the inside.

I have soaked it in oxi and also in PBW then used a pressure washer to blast off the top layer (it's a bit like sand). But the insides are still discoloured and they still feel rough.

What I need is acid, but what acid can I use and where can I get it?

Cheers
Nick

I've got a similar situation. Those of us who went in on Morten's keg bulk buy have all been cleaning our kegs because of this (although I've put off making a start until my fridge build is sorted) and the general consensus seems to be using phosphoric acid or similar. That's my plan when I get round to it but will be interested to see how you get on with the beer line cleaner.

Line cleaner should do it as that's what's it designed to do. I use the purple stuff which seems to do its job.

I had a problem with my plate chiller couldn't shift it...I then tried some lime scale remover tablets from the pound shop ...little soak and it wiped of with a cloth.

I seem to remember reading that beer stone is harder to remove than scale due to it being a combination of proteins and scale locked together. The suggested method of removal was pbw or similar to attack the protein followed by a scrub or rinse with acid to tackle the scale.
A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

I used phosphoric acid on the same problem i had. Antiformin is also supposed to be very good on organic deposits.
