Therminator question

Post by Beacon brewing » Mon Apr 07, 2014 2:29 pm

I treat myself to a Therminator recently and am very impressed with the results however, the last time I used it it became blocked with hops.

Can anyone suggest a method of in line filtering I could use?

I already have a hop strainer fitted to the boiler but it isn't stopping it all, The instructions suggest a Y filter, has anyone used one and if so could you tell me where to get one please.

Cheers

You need T40 stainless steel mesh. Use some of this to make a capsule to cover your hop strainer.
I've heard a few people mention the Y filters, but I don't know what they are to be honest.

I use one of these http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Plumbin ... 696/p79459 in conjunction with a good hop filter in the boiler, you really do not want any debris whatsoever getting inside the plate chiller.
I buy my grain & hops from here http://www.homebrewkent.co.uk/

Thanks for the help guys but I have a couple of questions.. If that's alright.

Have you any more details re the mesh capsule ie design or pictures if possible.

What size in line filter do you use as the link listed a few options.

How long do you wait from turning off your boiler until draining it.

Thanks.

I don't use a plate chiller, but I still wait 20 - 30 minutes after flame out before I run off. And I still get the odd hop seed through into the sieve under the counterflow chiller outlet.

Plate chillers are notorious for being prone to debris getting wedged in them though.

Firstly if you have got hops in the plate chiller, you will need to try and remove them.

I would recommend PBW (powdered brewery wash) mixed up with VERY hot water flush it through backwards / forwards and which way you can, to get rid of the debris. You may even find after several attempts / days after the hops have began to rot stuff will still come out if you repeat the procedure.

Either use a "Y" as linked to by Fubar OR buy a hop filter bag (muslin cloth things) and place that over your existing filter. If when brewing next and the bag starts to clog , nudge it with a mash paddle / spoon.

just a warning not to soak your nice new therminator in any harsh cleaning solutions, either here or somewhere else there is a nasty picture of what a corrosive solution will do to it, its not pretty

Thanks for all the advice folks.
I will be fitting another filter into the boiler and an inline y filter, especially after seeing that picture.
Also going to wait the 30 mins as suggested before draining it.

Cheers
