No Chiil Method

Post by Navigator » Wed May 07, 2014 4:35 pm

Hi all
Just getting ready to do my fist BIAB using the "no chill" method and will leave it over night in the FV to cool. I was wondering if I needed to oxygenate the wort again when I pitch the yeast? :)

Only oxygenate the wort when cooled.

I'm not sure what you're planning, but any plastic container receiving hot wort should be made of food grade HDPE.

"No chill" usually means transferring just off boiling wort to a HDPE jerry can, filling it right to the top and then squeezing out any remaining air before sealing it up and leaving it to cool. You then transfer the cool wort to a sanitised FV for pitching.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

You've probably done this by now, but if you pitch dried yeast in accordance with the given instructions, you might note there is no advice to oxygenate the wort. This is because everything necessary is in the packet.
Pitching liquid yeast is different, when both the quantity and condition of the yeast influence needs.
Don't worry if you've unnecessarily oxygenated the wort, the yeast will eventually consume it, but it will shorten the odds against contamination.
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

I just run the boiled wort into an FV and let it chill overnight - leaving the lids on cracked open.

Never fails - just pitch when down to room temp.
