Trying a one can kit - anyone had any luck with it?

Geordies Winter Warmer
plus
1kg Muntons Beer Enhancer
300gms Light Malt Extract
short brewed to 18ltr - approx. (note to self:- get round to calibrating the markings on side of FV)
used the kit yeast (hopefully a good one - I probably wouldn't know the difference yet anyway. lol. ) - pitched at 20degC

OG - 1050

Question:-
Is it possible to dry hop for flavouring after pitching? and would it help??

Cheers
Steve - A very hoppy newbie brewer (sorry)

Hi Steve, I am relatively new, so hopefully someone can confirm what I am about to write!

Yes you can dry hop, you ideally want to dry hop after fermentation has happened, which I guess would be about day 10 or so. You want to do this, as whilst fermentation is taking place it can remove the aroma and flavour from the hop in question (I think).

On my last, and first try, (my last brew) I dry hopped with Citra on day 9, and left it in the FV in a muslin bag with some dental floss attached to it until day 14, when I bottled.

Hope this helps.

Just checked it and found the yeast still laying ontop of a layer of foam!
Never happened before, foam usually drops the yeast into the wort after a couple of hours - first time I've used a Campden Tablet thou - so presume that be the reason?
I've very gently patted the yeast through to the wort with a sanitised spoon and cranked the heat up to 22deg to kick start it up (may leave the temp up anyway to brew a little sweeter)

Will think about making a yeast starter for next time.

Cheers Manngold

I knew some dry hopping goes into the barrel of some commercial brews - but i'm not that much a fan of hoppy beers - so putting some in just before the end of fermentation might give me the levels I'm after. Looks like some experimenting is in order.

You can see from above that i'm having problems again - arrrrggggg - but having fun really.

thanks again

Well I know I'm not - having any luck with it that is.

Horrible nasty smell to the brew this morning.

Tried out my new aquarium heater to keep the temp up overnight - set it to 21deg - max temp got up to 23 - HAVE I COOKED IT?

24/7,
You made the brew at 2pm, you checked the brew at 2.43pm and the Yeast is on top?
Have patience! Give the yeast some time to do its` work. It would have dropped through eventually!
Turn your heater down a notch then check the water temp with a thermometer a day later. The dials on the heaters are always wrong. Mine is set at 20deg to give me 22deg.
Don`t worry too much, it will probably be ok in the end! :D

thanks WA

thou I'm not quite that impatient
the timeline is FUBAR as I copy/pasted the first entry from another entry of mine to create a new thread

brewday was friday 30th
I've not checked it this morning - doing so too much!!! :D
but all weekend it has been giving off a musty smell and creating huge bubbles (5-6 inches across)

I'm sure it will work itself out in the end - it's just very different from previous brews but then a few things are new to me this time:-
first one can kit
first time with a Campden Tablet in the liquor (is this giving the bubbles?)
and first time with heater
so a little unsure as to whats going on

thanks for all the help
