'Fully Automatic' Mash Tun

Post by 24/7 » Tue Jun 03, 2014 12:22 pm

Funny the ideas you come up with when you can't sleep!!

I've been planning ahead, thinking of ways to improve my brewing - CHEAPLY.
With this in mind I have been looking at YouTube videos showing mash tun builds and looking for perforated S/S sheeting to make a filter bed.

DING! Washing machine drums are made out of perforated S/S material, and ready curved to create a void (just like Jim's hotplate cover :) ) - SORTED!

... and then I got to thinking

they also have a drum that holds fluid - and a heating element - and a pump

... so, why not use a top loader, fill the drum with grist and bung it on a hot 'wash' for an hour or so!!!!
the dolly will agitate the wort and wash out the maximum sugar from the malt, the drum will act as a filter when it's done, and a quick spin will negate the need to sparge - thou a quick rinse cycle would do that too!!!

Be a little 'fiddly' getting the spent grain out again - but you can't have everything.

Well there you go - I said I'd had an idea - didn't say it was a particularly GOOD idea.

Cheers
Steve

Have another nap! You have just jumped out of a nightmare.

If you take the SS drum out you'll find that the plastic outer is really messy usually disgusting. [FEARFUL FACE][FEARFUL FACE][FEARFUL FACE]

an old twintub may be a better base machine, the enamelled surface should be foodsafe, just leaving the spinner seals rubber pipework and pump to upgrade to foodsafe materials. might be easier to remove the spinning mechamism and seal up and use the spinning basket as a grain bag/tube and lift it out..

Had the odd midnight inspiration myself ;)
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

OK, this all sounds great, if somewhat mad, but I've got an idea brewing (see what I did there!) that's even crazier!

Why not get a decent sized cool box (mental I know) drill a hole in it and add a tap of some sorts, and then (this is the genius part) some sort of filter or strainer in the bottom?

I'm sorry for the sarcasm because I think it would be awesome if you could pull it off (seriously, I'd be you first customer).

That's awesome! I would love to see it working in person.
