Advice on all grain kit needed please

Post by new to brew » Sun Jun 08, 2014 1:43 am

You now get to groan at the amateur question. I would appreciate any advice on buying an all grain starter kit for someone that has has had experience of a friends home brew equipment, but owns none of his own. Would this be a good basic set up that provides everything he needs?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370563941576

Any help would be great thanks.

That lot will get you going! You will still need a method if dispensing....scrounged bottles. Be wary of the cost, you may be able to source individual items more cheaply. I don't know the electrim boiler, can't say how good it is
Just like trying new ideas!

There is only 1 boiler, a complete all grain kit should have 2. Also there is not a proper mash tun.

for that amount of money you could probably get a second hand set up, consisting of 2 boilers & a cool box style mash tun.

:)

Thanks for the responses, alternatively I found this all grain starter kit on hop&grain website for £192

https://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/starter-k ... arter.html

I'm hoping to buy it for my husbands birthday so I don't want to buy rubbish or pay over the odds but I would like to make sure there's everything he needs in the set. I've found set ups on brewUK and various other websites but they start to get more expensive.
Are there any recommended sites for second hand equipment?

Thanks again for any advice

There's plenty of shops that sell starter kits just depends what you need/ what he also has if he's previously brewed

I would prefer this set up - make an enquiry as to whether both boilers come with heating elements. He will still need a fermenting bucket, some bottles/pressure barrel & the raw ingredients - but those items are less expensive.

the second set listed looks like a better deal to me, u have both a insulated tun (the coldbox) and a coil to chill the brew post boil..

the boiler is the weak link, small and underpowered imho, but it will work and get hubby started,

got any like minded single sisters??

Fil, I use an electrim boiler for my boils and don't find it underpowered at all, it gets a nice rolling boil

Not what i ment, I was thinking more in terms of getting to the boil as most diy boil kettles have 2 elements fitted to hit the boil temp a lil quicker.. I should have been clearer..

The bottles can be sourced easily - I quickly collected over 100 speckled hen bottles  (these are clear glass, brown are better to protect the beer from bright light, but I like the shape of speckled hen bottles. when filled with beer clear bottles should be stored in a dark place)

Thank you all for your advice, It's much appreciated. I posted on a few forums and generally found I didn't receive a great response, possibly as I dared to ask a newbie question or maybe because I, a female, actually dared to not only research but ask questions about YOUR world of beer.

Anyway I'll quit with the sarcastic. moaning WOMAN bit and if my fellas brew eventually comes out anyway near to a meantime Yakima Red then It'll be worth being an brew widow.
Thanks guys, I'm off back to the kitchen now...

Oh but any other advice would be great....

See we do always have to have the last word!

Good luck with getting a kit sorted!
I don't think anyone's mentioned this so far, but you'll need a bottle capper and crown tops.

Sorry Fil, yeah it does take a while to get up to speed like you say, a good excuse to have a beer or two though... ;)
