Preparing a brand new corny keg

Post by Middo » Wed Jul 16, 2014 10:19 pm

I bought my first corny keg last week and was just wondering what I need to do in the way of cleaning/lubricating before kegging my next brew. Can I get away with just giving a soak with oxiclean and flushing it through the dip tubes and posts with CO2 or do I need to remove the posts, tubes & poppets and give them a good clean? And do I need to lubricate all the internal gaskets or just the o-ring on the lid?

If you put a scoop of oxi in with a kettle of hot water the gas generated is enough to force it up the dip tubes. I depress the middle of the post with the back of a spoon.

I'd try sealing it without lube. I've never needed it. If you insert the lid and lift it off the floor by the lid handle without snapping it shut and then connect the gas the weight of the keg helps seal it when the gas goes in. This will seat the lid and then you close it shut. I hope that makes sense.

+1

but dont forget the sanitation, ;) oxy is just a cleaner starsan or videne for no rinse sanitisers ;)

my old beat up kegs tend to seal easier with the lid orientated in one direction, if yours proves to be the same, a lil mark with a permanent marker over the lid/keg to indicate the best way round saves effort gas and time..

The advice that I was given when buying my first cornies was to always keep the the same lid with the same keg because sometimes the seal deforms to the contours of the lid/keg. I have numbered all of mine so that they are paired up.

bit off topic, but do you filter the beer when going in a corny? if not, does it not go off? As I understand it, with a pin, once you pop it it only has a short shelf life, I thought this was due to being cask conditioned. Does this not apply to corny conditioned beer?

Pins / casks are usually gravity fed so they take in air and oxygen and all the nasties that come with it as they dispense. With cornies / kegs the beer is pushed out using either CO2 or CO2 / nitrogen mix depending upon the type of beer.

Air bad, CO2 good... I've had beers in Cornies for 6 to 12 months without any detrimental effects, usually get better. This is usually if I've forgot about what's in em', if the labels fell off or if it's SWMBOs' ginger beer [-X

Cheers
